Gen-Z Communication Studio

The Studio is organised by the HKFYG Leadership Institute, supported by the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research (SCOLAR) and funded by the Language Fund. Since its inception in 2021, the Studio has sparked more than 4,000 students' interest in English language and improved their ability to communicate in English, enabling their personal growth and paving the way of their future success. In the year to come, the Studio will continue its mission to provide the platform that enables young people to take action to unlock opportunities through structured and diverse training to hone young people's communication skills, with a view to empowering them and equipping them with:

  • Logical reasoning
  • Empathetic leadership

School Workshops

We organise workshops for students to build their curiosity, confidence and open attitude to communication in English through group activities, intercultural dialogue and drama activities.

Joint-school Student Enhancement Training

A series of communication skills workshops led by professional trainers, covering topics such as public speaking, debate and negotiation.

We organise workshops to facilitate professional development of English teachers in communication training.

Speaking for All School Workshops (FYG01S)

OBJECTIVES

  • Establishing students' positive, diverse and open attitude to English; and

  • Developing students' curiosity and confidence in using English to communicate with others; and

  • Providing opportunities for students to engage in dialogue with people from all around the world


STRUCTURE

  • Theme options: Speech, Drama and Music/Intercultural Communication

  • 40 participating schools (50-80 students + 1 or more teacher(s) from each school)

Public Speaking Enhancement Training (FYG02S)

OBJECTIVES

  • Enabling students to research and select topic aligned with the interests, background and context of the audience; and

  • Facilitating students to develop a compelling content and cohesive structure with engaging introduction, logical and persuasive flows of ideas, supporting evidence and memorable conclusion; and

  • Enabling students to employ effective verbal and non-verbal techniques in delivering an impactful speech, with the interaction and resonation with the audience; and

  • Enabling students to prepare and deliver a thoughtful impromptu speech


STRUCTURE

  • A 6-hour programme divided into three consecutive training sessions;

  • 6 identical classes offered (C1/C2/C3 for junior division S1-3 & C4/C5/C6 for senior division S4-6);

  • Maxiumum of 30 students per class

Chamber Debate Club (FYG03S)

OBJECTIVES

  • Enabling students to develop the techniques and basic knowledge required to generate arguments in favour of and against most elementary topics commonly featured in debating competitions and discussions (CONTENT and ANALYSIS); and

  • Facilitating students to understand the basics of refutation and rebuttal, which include different ways in which arguments can be flawed, the specific reasoning for which arguments should be rejected, and ways by which arguments can be advanced (ENGAGEMENT); and

  • Enhancing and refining students' modes of communication through drawing upon a range of rhetorical (both textual and non-textual) devices, as well as general, non-verbal communicative techniques (STYLE); and

  • Organising and structuring students' speeches in a way that maximises clarity, impact, and efficacy with live audiences. (STRUCTURE); and

  • Cultivating students' a reasonably robust understanding of current affairs topics of contemporary salience and relevance, across a wide range of domains and subject disciplines (KNOWLEDGE)


STRUCTURE

  • A 13-hour programme divided into five consecutive training sessions and one session of debate simulation;

  • One cohort offered;

  • Maximum of 30 students per cohort

OBJECTIVES

  • Facilitating students to learn facilitation and mediation skills as well as cultivate empathetic leadership by engaging with multiple perspectives; and

  • Creating opportunities for students to practise persuasion and negotiation by building consensus and finding common goals among members despite differences; and

  • Developing students' convergent facilitation skills, conflict management skills and collaborative problem-solving skills


STRUCTURE

  • A 16-hour programme divided into four sessions of skillset training workshops and four sessions of issue exploration and experiential learning;

  • One cohort offered;

  • Maximum of 45 students per cohort

Train-the-trainer Workshops for Teachers (FYG01T)

OBJECTIVES

  • Advancing teachers' understanding of the rationale and principles of innovative, and professional drama and/or public speaking teaching and how this training can contribute to students' language learning; and

  • Facilitating teachers to plan, design and implement innovative and professional English language lessons with a focus on helping secondary school students improve their competence in speaking; and

  • Helping teachers to employ strategies to foster student autonomy and boost self-confidence in the domains of pronunciation, public speaking, emotional intelligence, and articulating their learning motivations; and

  • Equipping teachers with enhanced tools and strategies to cultivate students' motivation and enhance their public speaking skills within an academic setting
